The 'Grain Free Gourmet' and the 'Everyday Grain Free Gourmet' cookbooks, written by Jodi Bager and Jenny Lass, are a blessing for those on a grain-free diet. These cookbooks are based on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, which was created to help or possibly cure those with Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome and other digestive disturbances. This diet and the research backing it is documented in 'Breaking the Vicious Cycle' by Elaine Gottschall. The recipes in the 'Grain-Free Gourmet' cookbooks are not only grain-free but also free of complex sugars and starches, as well as low in lactose. The recipes would also be appropriate for the GAPS diet or anyone who is gluten intolerant. The recipes in these cookbooks range from how to make your own probiotic yogurt and mayonnaise to delicious desserts and snacks. Baked goods such as muffins, breads and cakes are made with almond flour and honey and taste amazing. Some of our family's favourites are the Cinnamon-Pecan Muffins from the 'Grain-Free Gourmet' or the Lemon-Cranberry muffins from the 'Everyday Grain-Free Gourmet'. There are recipes for delicious salads and salad dressings, soups and main dishes. The authors have also revised recipes for favorite dishes that would generally be made with grain such as the Crispy Southern Chicken, Canneloni or Lemon Meringue pie. A list of substitutes for everyday ingredients and menus are also included in these cookbooks. Comments from the authors regarding the history of some of the recipes and their individual stories enliven the books.
