"complete and balanced" pet foods. "How can this be?" you may well ask.
The claim "complete and balanced" is based on uncertain minimum nutritional requirements. Many vitamins and minerals are lost in the processing or missing to begin with. Also many brands are highly processed with questionable chemical additives. Many pet foods, even those with fancy advertising claims, leave much to be desired. These are major reasons why chronic health problems start developing prematurely in many animals.
Here are seven important things to look for in a superior food.
1. Whole grains contain the full spectrum of nutrients (B vitamins, trace minerals, vitamin E, fiber and more) as nature intended. They are as important for pets as they are for humans. Most pet foods instead contain refined starches.
2. Whole, quality meats approved for human consumption, not meat by-products which provide low quality, hard-to-assimilate proteins.
3. Flax seed - ground to ensure nutrients are available - is the best source of omega 3 essential fatty acid, as well as ligmans.
4. Kelp or alfalfa meal give an important mineral/nutrient boost to animals (just as they do to people!)
