My doctor told me I have high cholesterol, do I have any hope of lowering it without going on drugs?
Yes, it is possible. We have had many customers successfully lower their cholesterol without drugs, however, be sure to consult your doctor about the cholesterol lowering plan you are going to use. Here are several parts of an effective plan, lifestyle-driven plan to lower your cholesterol. It is important to know that every cell in our body can make cholesterol. To get our cholesterol levels to where they should be, we need to change how the body manufactures and handles lipids.

Lifestyle & Diet Considerations
  • exercise; quit smoking
  • eliminate all heat processed oils, including margarine and most mayonnaises
  • reduce total fat to less than 30% (20-25% would be good)
  • take in flax oil and extra virgin olive oil daily
  • eat almonds, sesame seeds, and other good nuts and seeds
  • eat one to two tablespoons of milled flax daily
  • eat beans (kidney, split peas, lentils, and other legumes)
  • cut down excess meats, cheeses, milkÑmany people eat too much protein (one way to do this would be to have beans one day, and moderate amounts of meat, chicken or fish the next, beans the next, and so on)
  • eliminate sugar -- it causes you to make more cholesterol (small amounts of honey, maple syrup, etc. are okay)
  • concentrate on whole grains -- white flour and refined grains also encourage the body to make more cholesterol (brown rice, kamut, barley, oatmeal are excellent). The nutrients in whole grains encourage healthy fat metabolism (B's, minerals)
  • certain people would benefit from a major reduction in carbohydrate consumption
  • take in extra vegetables they contain important nutrients. Green leafy vegetables are important as they contain small amounts of important essential fatty acids
  • include lecithin granules (about 1-2 Tbsp/day) -- on oatmeal works well
  • soy protein alone has lowered cholesterol in studies -- include soy products in your diet (tofu, tempeh, miso, soy protein, soy milk, etc.)
Supplement Considerations
  • supplement with evening primrose oil (3-6/day), antioxidants (eg. A, C, E); perhaps a once-a-day & garlic. Evening primrose has been shown to dramatically lower cholesterol where EFA's are lacking
  • guggulipid is a potent cholesterol-lowering herb
  • support the liver with herbs such as dandelion and milk. I am sure that there are other helpful supplements -- but this definitely works
