Summertime Health Tips
Summer is finally here – long, lazy days of sunshine and flowers, baseball and soccer, being outdoors, walking by the shore, enjoying a holiday. Whatever we do, we generally enjoy a lighter fare during the warmer weather. However, the body has the same demand for nutrients all year long to perform at its best, and to be full of the energy and vitality we desire.

Our first need is to be well hydrated. Lots of water throughout the day is essential, and you can improve the mineralizing and alkalizing properties of your water by adding trace mineral drops, aerobic oxygen drops, or a squeeze of fresh organic lemon juice. Avoid sugary drinks or those laden with caffeine or chemicals. Pop has nine teaspoons of sugar in one can, and iced tea is often just as bad.
Getting the “colours” you need to energize and maintain the body should be an easy task with all of summer’s bounty becoming available. Aim for nine servings per day of fruits and vegetables (at least five from vegetables) and ensure you include lots of leafy greens. These colourful plant pigments provide important antioxidants that stop oxidative damage to the body, so choose a variety of deep colours. Choose organic produce as often as possible for its purity, nutritional value, and taste – always your best choice.
Our need for protein continues even on hot summer days. Choose “lean and clean” proteins – wild caught fish, legumes, naturally raised meats, organic yogurt, nuts and seeds, free range eggs, high quality whey proteins, and organic soy. A protein smoothie with fresh summer fruits makes an easy and welcome meal with plenty of easy-to-digest protein to keep sweet cravings and energy lags away.
Even in summer we need our beneficial fats. Mix up some delicious salad dressings with essential fatty acids – such as our Flax Oil Salad Dressing or Mediterranean Salad Dressing. Recipes are available in store. Top your salad with some fresh walnuts or enjoy a handful of pumpkin seeds for a nutritious and satisfying snack.
