Q: Seasonal allergies take a big chunk out of my life every year. What can I do?
Before your allergy season begins, start with a few easy preventative steps to help you handle the allergy season better. The Chinese herb astragalus helps strengthen the overall constitution; take it daily for one month before the
hay fever season (except if you have a fever or infection). Bee pollen can also be taken ahead of time as a gradual way to build immunity, along with Pollinosan, a homeopathic remedy. And working on your intestinal health through pre- and pro-biotics such as fos, innersync, and acidophilus can help ease symptoms.

While protein may appear to be the cause of your problem, many holistic practitioners believe that bringing the digestive tract into a truly healthy state is the best defence. The basic intestinal tonic of chlorophyll, acidophilus and George's aloe vera is very helpful. Many allergy sufferers would benfit as well by eliminating possible food allergens, such as wheat, sugar and dairy products, since whatever you may be allergic to aggravates the gut which in turn exaggerates your pollen reactions as well.

If you are in the midst of hay fever attacks now, homeopathy chosen with your specific symptoms in mind can offer quick effective relief. Try R84, Pollonil, or other superior combinations. Also take lots of vitamin C and the bioflavonoid quercetin throughout the day to help prevent the histamine reactions that trigger your discomfort. Drink lots of water to thin secretions. And be sure your bedroom - the place where you spend 8 hours a day - is as clean and free of allergens as possible. Sterols and sterolins may be used to balanceyour immune system and eliminate or lower allergic reactions in the future.

Allergies are caused by a number of factors: second-hand smoke and pollution, stress, compromised immune function, and leaky gut syndrome among them. Addressing the underlying causes, avoiding your allergens as much as possible, and breast feeding the next generation will help us lower future allergy distress.
